Betty Newman-Maguire was born in Kells, Co. Meath in 1952. She is a practising artist who graduated with a First Class Hons B.A. Degree in Sculpture from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 1988 and was awarded a Master of Fine Art from the University of Ulster, Belfast in 1998. She has exhibited widely and is the recipient of many awards, public commissions and residencies in Ireland, France, Germany and America. Newman-Maguire has mounted 16 solo exhibitions in Ireland, Germany and America. Her work is in numerous private and public collections worldwide.
Newman-Maguire has lectured at Frobel Teacher training College, Sion Hill, Dublin, Dunlaoghaire Institute of Art and Design, Dublin, visiting lecturer to the National college of Art and Design and at the University of Ulster, Belfast. She also lectured on the M.A. for Art Therapy at Queens University, Belfast. She is currently arts coordinator/lecturer at Beaufort College, co. Meath. She was appointed to An Bord of the National College of Art and Design in 2003 and was a member of the Board of the Sculptor’s Society of Ireland. She lives and works from her studios at Castlekernan, Carnaross, Kells, Co. Meath.
Her public sculptures range in material from steel, wood, stone, bronze and earth. The scale of her public work includes a 35 foot long Viking Ship, a 4foot steel Cormorant and an installation using 101 felled trees. All her public sculptures are site specific and are made in response to the environment.
In her private work she delights in experimenting with materials and uses, glass, wood, ceramics, bricks, fibre, photography, text, video and the more traditional materials of stone and bronze. She has collaborated with musicians and performance artists to further develop themes within her work. For Newman-Maguire it is extremely important to marry materials concept and place.
